Jake Hampton’s Economics of Castle Design My project for world history is called Economics of Castle Design. For this project we had to build a castle, with four other partners. We had to purchase parts from a parts list, and construct a castle, but we had several stipulations. First, it had to have that defense of a medieval castle. These defenses were murder holes, arrow slits, portcullis, moats, etc. Second, we had to pick which role we would pick, like construction manager, civil engineer, historian, or finance manager. Third, we had to know how to get most of our wants with limited resources, also known as economics.
Some challenges of this project were staying on task because we would always play around. Second, we had to keep track of our budget using a lot of math. To overcome the challenge of staying on task was that there was usually one person telling everyone they were going off task. For the second challenge of keeping track of our budget is that we just did the math right next to the stuff on our budget paper we bought so that we could keep track easily and continuous tracking made it easy to keep track of our budget. We learned in our world history class that we had to demonstrate in our work are that we learned about budgeting and economics which we had to use our knowledge of that to buy our parts and make sure we stayed on budget. We learned that if demand is low but the supply is high, then the price is low. If the demand is high but the supply is low, then the price goes up. The prices of the parts would change based on these rules. Also, some parts are elastic goods which means if demand changes then the price changes on that item. However, some stuff is inelastic which means demand doesn’t change even if price does change. An example of this is when our world history teacher, Mr.Anticoli, made the price of the glue sticks to the hot glue guns go up but everyone still bought them because they were essential to building our castle. One example of elastic products were the trees because the demand was not as high. We also had to keep track of how much money we used from our budget so that we didn’t go over our budget. We also had to demonstrate our learnings of the medieval castle defenses because we had to properly protect our castle. My first artifact is the physical castle because this was the main goal of teaching us the defense of medieval castles.
Knowledge we had to have is we had to actually know how they defended their castle.
because I and all my partners had 3 weeks to build a castle and we had a lot to do on our castle like the walls, the crenulations, and the PVC pipe towers. My second artifact is the paper collaborativeThis artifact shows that I have become more were we wrote down all our purchases so that we could keep track of our budget. To do this we had to know basic math so we could add or subtract numbers and we had to know the rules of supply and demand. So for example, if our teacher had a lot of one size of wall he would lower the price but if he didn't have enough he would raise the price.
I think this artifact shows me becoming more persistent because on the side of the chart and on the back of the chart you can see that we had to keep doing our math because we had a lot of strange numbers to add or subtract and we just kept doing it till we got our math correct so we could get it approved. This project taught me a lot more than just about castles. It taught me how to be careful with money and to think and prioritize purchases. This will help me when I make real money and have to pay real bills.
