Heathy Meal Planning Project

My wellness project was Healthy Meal Planning. For the Healthy Meal Planning project we had to make a meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All our meals had to follow certain rules. The rules the meals had to follow were, the meal had to be something you would actually eat (exp. You could not have half a cup of whole grain pasta and a cup of sun flower seeds with it). The next rule is that you had to make sure that at every meal , you had the correct food groups and all the food groups in each meal and we also had to make sure we got the correct amount of each food group (Grains= 6oz., Fruits= 1 ½ cups, Veggies= 2 ½ cups, Protein= 5 oz., and Dairy= 3 cups).

The steps for doing the healthy meal planning project were learn what healthy actually means (Healthy eating is having the correct food groups and have the correct amount of each food group every day). We also had to learn about energy in equals energy out (Energy in is the food you eat that gets into you blood stream and goes into your brain to help it work all day. Energy out means you exercise every day for at least 60 minutes a day so that you can take the energy you got from the food that day and instead of your body storing the energy as fat, your body will use the energy for running around and moving around). We also had to learn about the My Plate (The My Plate is made by the USDA and is a picture of a plate. The plate is divided into different parts depending on the serving size required for your body each day, the fruits group is in the top left of the plate, the veggies group is at the bottom left of the plate, the grains is at the top right of the plate, and the protein is at the bottom right of the plate. On the outside of the plate is a cup that shows that you are supposed to have a serving of dairy every day).

Some problems I ran in to during this project was finding different types of food from each food group that wouldn’t be too much but would also go well with all the other food that I had for that meal. Another problem I ran in to during this project was making sure that all the foods in that meal would all be able to be added up to equal the same amount of that food group that was specified on the My Plate, and not have too much of a food group in one day or not have enough of a food group in one day. I overcame the problem of not having foods from each food group that I would actually eat by taking my time and looking over all the papers of the food groups and coming up with a proper meal. I overcame my problem of not having the correct amount of each food group by adding or taking away parts of a food in each meal to have a correct amount of a food group.

My first artifact is the picture of the My Plate from the USDA where we learned about serving sizes and how many serving sizes you must have every day. The serving sizes are Grains= 6oz., Fruits= 1 ½ cups, Veggies= 2 ½ cups, Protein= 5 oz., and Dairy= 3 cups).

My second artifact is the poster we had to make. It showed what food group we were eating at that meal and how much we were eating so that we could get the correct amount of each group every day.

I think I grew in persistence because I had to get the right amount of the food group and a food that I would actually eat. I tried to have pasta with 1 cup of sunflower seeds but I would never actually eat that for dinner and I had a lot of food that wasn’t specified, like what kind of milk would I drink, how would I cook the chicken, and what would I have on my bagel. Persistence is never giving up and just doing it over and over again, like how I never have up in trying to do my drafts on what foods I would eat or trying to come up with the proper amount of food groups in each meal.

I think I also grew in creativity because I had to be creative in making the meals and making meals I would actually eat and at the same time get enough of each food group, for example is when I had to make the meals and I tried to put sunflower seeds with pasta and how that wasn't very creative. It was kind of like a puzzle where you have to keep putting the pieces in different place and put them in and take them out until they all connected correctly. In this case the pieces were some type of food and the pieces it connected to were the other food groups in that meal.
